Exit Dance Theatre premiered "Pit Girls" at its February 2004 performance at the Firehouse. This piece seeks to illuminate the experience of 19th century English women who worked in the coal pits at the various collieries in Northern England. In the latter part of the century they were only allowed to work above the pits sorting coal etc. They were most controversial not only because they worked a man's job, but because they wore trousers, and pinned up their skirts in order to keep them out of the way. The piece, choreographed by Fontaine Dubus features Nicole Cheney, Wendy Hamel, Erin Foley, Tricia Walsh and Ms. Dubus with music by fiddle master E.J. Ouellette.
